The Town of Stonington has taken a proactive stance in trying to provide flood awareness information to our residents. This effort is especially important as approximately one-third of the Town’s parcels are in some sort of flood zone. Some of the initiatives that we have undertaken with regards to flood awareness information include;
· Allowing residents to receive discounts on their flood insurance premiums. This program is called the Community Rating System or CRS. For more information with regards to this effort, click here.
· Providing Flood Zone Determinations to the Public. For more information on this service, click here.
· Preparing and Distributing an Annual Flood Awareness Newsletter. This year’s newsletter was sent out in August 2006. To view a copy of this newsletter, click here.
· Assisting residents, insurance agents and realtors with flood related questions. There have been times when the FEMA maps indicate a structure is in a flood zone, when our Town’s GIS shows otherwise. In these instances, the Engineering Department has been able to provide residents with information regarding FEMA’s Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA) Process. For more information on this process, click here.
