JUSTICES OF THE PEACE

        ORDINANCE RE:  JUSTICES OF THE PEACE

WHEREAS, Section 9-183a of the General Statutes of Connecticut, Revisions of 1958, as amended, authorizes a municipality by ordinance to provide for the selection of a lesser number of justices of the peace than the number provided under Section 51-220 and 51-219c; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Stonington, by ordinance, presently has authorized the number of justices of the peace to be (44) forty-four; and

WHEREAS, Public Act 94-230 enacted by the Connecticut Legislature has, notwithstanding the Town ordinance, increased the number of justices of the peace for the Town of Stonington by one-half, for an additional (22) twenty-two justices of the peace for a total of (66) sixty-six; and

WHEREAS, Public Act 94-230 was effective only for the election year of 1994; and

WHEREAS, Section 9-183a(b) of the General Statutes of Connecticut provides that a Town may amend its ordinance and charter provisions to provide for a number of justices to be selected in 1996 and quadrennially thereafter; and

WHEREAS, (66) sixty-six justices of the peace is consistent with Section 9-183a(b) of the General Statutes of Connecticut.

THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE LEGAL VOTERS OF THE TOWN IN    LAWFUL TOWN MEETING DULY ASSEMBLED THAT THE FOLLOWING ORDINANCE BE ESTABLISHED BY THE TOWN OF STONINGTON:

1.      That the number of justices of the peace for the Town of Stonington shall be and hereby is (66) sixty-six.

2.      Section 6-3c of the Charter for the Town of Stonington is hereby amended to provide for (66) sixty-six justices of the peace, 22 nominated by each major party as defined in subparagraph (B) of the subdivision (6) of Section 9-372, and 22 for minor party members and unaffiliated voters.

3.      This ordinance shall become effective (15) fifteen days after publication thereof in a newspaper having circulation in the Town of Stonington.

4.      That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with this ordinance are hereby repealed. (Ordinance adopted July 2, 1984).
