ACT RE:  PROVIDING FOR AN ASSESSOR IN THE TOWN OF STONINGTON AND ABOLISHING THE BOARD OF ASSESSORS

Section 1.  The Board of Assessors of the Town of Stonington is abolished as of October 1, 1947.

Section 2.  There shall be a single Assessor in said Town, who shall be appointed as hereinafter prescribed and shall have all the powers, duties and rights conferred or imposed upon said Board of Assessors.

Section 3.  Appeals may be taken from assessments made by said Assessor in the same manner as appeals may be taken from assessments made by the former Board of Assessors.

Section 4.  Said Assessor shall be appointed by a majority vote of the Board of Finance of said Town, within thirty (30) days after the first Monday of October, 1947, and he shall hold office until the first Monday of October, 1949.  Within the period of thirty (30) days preceding the first Monday of October, 1949, and biennially thereafter, said Board of Finance, by a majority vote, shall appoint a successor to the Assessor whose term will expire on such first Monday of October in each instance.  Any vacancy shall be filled by a majority vote of said Board of Finance within thirty (30) days after the occurrence of such a vacancy, and the person appointed to fill such vacancy shall hold office for the unexpired portion of the term of his predecessor.

Section 5.  Any incumbent of the office may be removed by a majority vote of the Board of Finance of said Town after a hearing upon written charges of dishonesty or incompetence preferred by a member of the Board of Finance.

Section 6.  All sections of the General Statutes and of all public and special acts inconsistent with the provisions of this Act, shall have no force and effect so far as they relate to the assessment of property for taxation in the Town of Stonington.
