STONINGTON Blizzard Alert

EOS

The Stonington team has been preparing for the potential impacts of a potential blizzard and want to be sure you are prepared as well.

***Update as of 4pm January 28th***

We are expecting possible blizzard conditions in Stonington, starting before daybreak on Saturday and continuing until Saturday evening. Winds could gust to 50 - 60 MPH with temperatures in the upper teens and low 20’s.  The impact on travel could be major with very low visibilities and snow-covered roads. Blizzard conditions are expected between 6am-4pm. A minor to moderate number of power outages are possible. Total snowfall could range from 18” – 24” in Eastern CT.

The Transfer Station will be closed Saturday and Sunday.

And, as always, please join us thanking Public Works who will be out working on our 18 dedicated plow routes that cover 120 miles of roads. They will likely start pre-storm treatments at 8pm Friday and work long hours throughout the weekend.

Please check on friends, family and neighbors to see if they need any assistance before, during or after the storm.

What should you do to prepare?

• Check on your heating fuel. Please also know, heating fires are the second leading cause of home fires. Please take all precautions necessary to stay safe, including keeping at least three feet of space between your heat source any potential sources of fuel (paper, clothing, bedding or rugs) .

• Be sure you have at least a three-day supply of water and food on hand.

• Prepare a storm kit with flashlights, batteries, medication and other essential items. Consider a car storm kit as well, and you may want to fill your gas tank to avoid fuel line from freezing.

• Charge all necessary devices ahead of time and plug sensitive computer and electronic equipment into surge protectors.

Snow Ordinance

As a reminder, the town's snow ordinance requires vehicles to be removed from the roadways when there is over 2" of snow for the purposes of plowing. Vehicles not removed will be ticketed and or towed. For residents in the Stonington Borough, when there is over 2" of snow, Water St must be clear of vehicles and vehicles on Main street and Elm street must be parked on the even side of the street on even days and odd side of the street on odd days. We thank you for your assistance and hope this message will allow for efficient cleanup of our streets.

Stay safe. Thank you Stonington.
