Stonington and Groton Town Tax Codes Used by the Dept. of Motor Vehicles
Mystic and Old Mystic villages are located in the towns of Groton and Stonington. The east side of the Mystic River is part of the town of Stonington. Motor vehicles located in Mystic and Old Mystic on the east side of the river should be registered with the tax town code of 137 for the town of Stonington. The Department of motor vehicles will use the Mystic and Old Mystic post office zip code 06355 when a tax town code is not listed when registering a motor vehicle. This results in vehicles being taxed by the town of Stonington.  In order to prevent the wrong town from receiving your registered vehicle please enter the correct town tax code.  The town tax code for Stonington is 137 and the town tax code for Groton is 059.

A:    The motor vehicle registration may contain the wrong tax code number. You will need to correct the town tax code with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Q:   I moved to another Connecticut town after October 1st and purchased a new and or used motor vehicle in which I transferred the same registration. Why am I taxed on the supplemental list in the town of Stonington?

:    In order to receive a credit toward the tax for a new purchase of a vehicle you need to receive a bill from the town in which you paid a tax on the October 1st vehicle, that was sold or traded-in for the newly acquired vehicle.
