AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, PROVIDING FOR REDISTRICTING OF VOTING DISTRICTS.
NOTICE OF SPECIAL TOWN MEETING
TOWN OF STONINGTON

 

The Special Town Meeting of the electors and citizens qualified to vote in Town Meetings of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, will be held at Stonington High School, US Route 1, 176 S Broad St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.

To consider, discuss, and vote upon the following:

A resolution to adopt an Ordinance of the Town of Stonington, Connecticut, establishing amended boundaries of the Town’s voting districts so as to comply with the Connecticut General Statutes and the new State Legislative Districts established by the State of Connecticut Reapportionment Commission. A copy of the complete text of the proposed Ordinance is on file in the Town Clerk’s office during normal business hours and online at www.stonington-ct.gov.

At this hearing electors and residents may appear and be heard.

All ordinances and amendments thereto shall become effective following approval by Town Meeting and fifteen (15) days after publication in a newspaper having a substantial circulation within the Town of Stonington.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE TOWN OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, PROVIDING FOR REDISTRICTING OF VOTING DISTRICTS.

 

WHEREAS, the State of Connecticut Reapportionment Commission has done redistricting of General Assembly districts as a result of the 2020 census results; and

WHEREAS, the State’s redistricting results in a Town local district being located in two (2) different General Assembly districts; and

WHEREAS, pursuant to the Connecticut General Statutes, a local voting district may not be situated in two (2) different General Assembly districts; and

WHEREAS, in order to comply with the Connecticut General Statutes, the Town of Stonington must amend its voting districts.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY ORDAINED BY THE LEGAL VOTERS OF THE TOWN OF STONINGTON IN LAWFUL TOWN MEETING DULY ASSEMBLED THAT:

Section 1.  That the ordinances of the Town of Stonington be amended by adding a section to read as follows:

The Town of Stonington shall have five (5) voting districts which boundaries shall be as set forth on the map attached hereto and incorporated herein.

Section 2.  That all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict with this ordinance are hereby repealed.

Section 3.  If any provision of this ordinance or the application thereof is held to be invalid such invalidity shall not affect other provisions or applications of any other part of this ordinance which can be given effect without the invalid provisions of applications; and to this end the provisions of this ordinance and the various applications thereof are declared to be severable.

This Ordinance shall become effective following approval by Town Meeting and fifteen (15) days after publication in a newspaper having a substantial circulation within the Town of Stonington.
