Stonington Rain Barrel Project

Rain Barrel

Did you know that capturing rainwater in a barrel before it hits the ground decreases stormwater run-off, helps your plants and results in cost savings?

Stormwater runoff can carry pollutants from paved surfaces into groundwater and our local waterways. These pollutants affect the quality of our recreational water and its larger ecosystem, including our local fish and shellfish populations.

Further, nearly 40% of our water, on average, is used outdoors, for uses such as a lawn and garden and does not require treated water. In fact gardens and lawns prefer natural rain water. Rain barrels are an environmentally friendly, convenient way to make your home more cost efficient. One rain barrel attached to your downspout can provide you with approximately 1700 gallons of water that can be used outdoors for your flower and vegetable gardens, potted plants, to fill your pool, wash your car and any other outdoor use. While rain water collected in rain barrels is not potable, your plants will love the chlorine free water and it will decrease your water bill.

The Great American Rain Barrel Company makes 100% re-purposed, food grade, UV protected and BPA free water barrels. Produced in our neighboring state of Massachusetts. They can be purchased individually or you can link multiple barrels together. They come in colors of Forest Green, Nantucket Grey or Earth Brown. You can also order unpainted barrels. While barrels cost $85, they- on average- pay for themselves in one year. $10 from each order will also go to benefit the Stonington Beautification Committee. The deadline is July 28th and pick-ups will be on August 5, 2021 at Human Services. Place your order here: www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com/community/ and choose the Town of Stonington. And please.. help us share!

Stonington is home to so many wonderful people, and we want to share our gratitude for local Stonington resident, Stacy Cassata, who made this project possible!
