West Broad Street Sidewalk and Tree Update

DPW photo

Thanks to the efforts of the Department of Public Works and our Stonington Beautification Committee residents will see improvements starting along West Broad Street, across from the intersection with Moss Street. The sidewalks that run along West Broad street in this location had become a safety hazard, with the trees along the path contributing to the upheaval of the sidewalk.

After obtaining approval from the State Department of Transportation, activity started this week. The trees along this segment will all come down as part of this work of improving this stretch of sidewalk, and in the early spring 4 new trees will be planted. The trees will also be moved slightly closer to the road to allow for the sidewalk to be ADA compliant, ensuring those in wheelchairs or with carriages can safely make it down the sidewalk. Please know, all memorial plaques will be removed and stored over the winter and will be replaced alongside the new trees in the spring.

The Beautification Committee will also be working on plans to replace tree’s overtime throughout the downtown, ensuring improved safety and accessibility.
