Community Connections

"Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much."- Helen Keller

The coming weeks will continue to test our community and we are asking everyone to help in any way they can. For some, that will be remaining home. Do not underestimate how important a contribution this is. For others, it may be checking-in on a friend or neighbor, sewing a face mask, delivering groceries, making a donation or purchasing membership for later use to a non-profit in need, supporting a local business, or volunteering your time.

If you are interested in volunteering to help during this time please fill in this survey created by a group of local volunteers or call Human Services (860-535-5015).  Another option, is to visit the Stonington Non-Profits website, which showcase the work of nearly 40 local non-profits and also offers a real-time list of their local outreach efforts around COVID-19. You can learn more and also register your interest, both for now and when times are better, by visiting the link here.

Here are a few community initatives as examples:

  • All residents, age 62 and over, are invited to participate in a new program- You Are Not Alone- where you will receive a weekly check-in call, while we are practicing social distancing, from a community volunteer. Please reach out to Human Services for more information about recieving a call or volunteering for the program.
  • Stonington Feeds Stonington, set- up by a local resident, donations are collected through a gofundme to purchase gift cards to local restaurants. From there, the gift cards are sent to Stonington Human Services where they will be given out to residents in need. Learn more here.
  • Participate in the Como’s online thrift store live sales events. Please note, the Como is also still accepting donations for their thrift store.
  • Sewing face masks and protective gowns. Thanks to a group of local residents who have been spearheading efforts, anyone who can sew masks or gowns can drop them off at Town Hall M-F (8-5). They will be distributed to local establishments that have requested help. Also if you have any PPE, please contact the State by filling out the online form found here.
  • Come outside at 8pm each night and ring a bell to show unity and bring comfort while people stay home during the coronavirus pandemic. You can share photos on social media and tag @townofstonington.

If you have ideas on further ways the community can connect in this time of need please call Town Hall. (860-535-5050)
