Stonington has a mandatory recycling program along with a user fee (bag program) designed to offset tipping fees at the Preston Waste-to-Energy facility. Recyclable items must be separated and all other trash put into "yellow bags." Bags are sold at numerous shops and markets throughout the town and come in two sizes: 15 gallon for 75 cents each and 33 gallon for $1.25 each.
