December Storm Update-Stonington Emergency Management

Alert image

The Stonington Emergency Management Team is closely monitoring a storm that will impact our area tonight into tomorrow morning.  Recent updates to forecast models are providing growing confidence that in Stonington we should expect to see heavy rain and wind gusts between 60-65 mph possible. With the soil already saturated there is a greater potential for power outages and tree damage as a result of these winds. The timing for the strongest winds will be around the morning commute, which may impact town and school operations.  Please stay prepared and follow some helpful tips:

  • Avoid all downed power lines.  Some lines without power may become re-energized at any time so stay clear. Contact Stonington PD to report downed lines at 860-599-4411.
  • With expected high surf make sure you stay away from low lying areas including rocks in and around the Stonington Point area.
  • Do not drive through flooded roadways.
  • Do not enter flooded basements as there is a greater risk for electrocution under certain circumstances.
  • Secure loose items on your property including holiday decorations.
  • Make sure your generators are in good running order and follow the manufacturer instructions for safe operation.
  • If there is an outage, contact Eversource directly at 1-800-286-2000.  You can also sign up to receive storm outage updates through text, email or phone at www.eversource.com.
