STONINGTON ANNOUNCES NEW FOOD WASTE COLLECTION PILOT PROGRAM!
To help Stonington residents remove heavy, wet food waste from their yellow bags which are incinerated at Wheelabrator Lisbon, the Town of Stonington is excited to announce the Stonington Food Waste Curbside Collection Pilot Program!! All households will be receiving a mailer detailing the program, made possible by a much-appreciated Sustainable Materials Management Grant from the CT DEEP. The contracted trash hauler, F.E. Crandall Disposal, will be picking up green bags (Town supplied) that residents have filled with separated food waste from the non-recyclable trash of their yellow bag. Stonington’s food waste will now be brought to Quantum BioPower where it will be turned into renewable energy and further composted. We look forward to kicking off Waste Not Stonington!
How To Dispose Of Your New Green Bag
The Town of Stonington is VERY excited about our new food waste collection pilot program! The program has been made possible through a Sustainable Materials Management Grant from the CT DEEP
We’re asking residents to voluntarily separate their food waste from their yellow bag so it can be further processed into renewable energy and compost instead of heading to the incinerator.
If you have not picked up your FREE 4 gallon compost pail and FREE 50 green bags, kits are available in the Solid Waste Department in the lower level of the Town Hall. Also check our announcements for possible distribution events.
Each week you can now place your food scraps out for pick up with your regularly scheduled trash disposal. The hauler has a truck for disposal of your recyclables and a separate truck for disposal of your yellow bags. He has now incorporated a 3rd truck to pick up the green food waste bags.
We are hearing from the hauler that some of the green bags are “very well hidden”. They are in the recycling bins, buried in containers holding yellow bags and not easily spotted by the food waste pick up team.
Let’s help our partner, Crandall Disposal make easy work of locating and disposing of your food scraps! The green bags MUST be tied and it is suggested to leave the green bag in your new compost pail and place it next to your yellow bag and recycling OR if you put your trash out in the morning leave the bag on the ground for easy pick up!
Missed the pick up? The Stonington Transfer Station has a dedicated 8YD Food Waste container for your convenience. Just bring in your bag and drop it in the can!
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE NEW PROGRAM!

PINK BAG PROGRAM
Free Curbside collection of used clothing, shoes and accessories effective April 6, 2020
Beginning April 6, 2020, the Town of Stonington implemented the Curbside collection of used textiles: clothing, shoes and accessories. The service will be provided by Simple Recycling (www.simplerecycling.com) and will be free to the Town of Stonington and its' residents. If you currently donate to a local organzation, please continue to do so. This program is meant to offset the 85% of all textiles that are currently disposed of in the trash.
How It Works:
The week before the program launched, Simple Recycling sent informational mailers to residents of the Town. These mailers contained free Simple Recycling bags. When cleaning out closets or disposing of unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories, residents can place them in the pink bags. Residents can then place the Simple Recycling bags at the curb near their recycling container on their normal recycling collection day. The Town’s contracted hauler will pick them up, free of charge. The hauler will leave replacement Simple Recycling bags at the curb. If a resident is in need of a pink bag, You may pick one up at the Town Hall or the Transfer Station Gate House.
Simple Recycling will collect a wide range of used textiles items. The list of accepted items includes:
Used or New Clothing (men’s, women’s, children’s), Boots & Shoes, Bedding (sheets, pillow cases, blankets, comforters), Belts & Ties, Bras, Coats & Jackets, Fashion Accessories, Handbags & Purses, Hats & Gloves, Linens, Pillows, Sandals & Slippers (in pairs), Socks (single or in pairs), Stuffed Animals, Table Linens, Towels, Undergarments
For more information about the Simple Recycling program, residents can call 866-835-5068 or visit www.simplerecycling.com.

- Do not put recyclables in plastic bags of any kind.
- Plastic food storage bags and film are not recyclable.
- Do not include food contaminated paper with your recyclables.
