Food Waste Collection Pilot Program

STONINGTON FOOD WASTE COLLECTION PILOT PROGRAM

curbside set up

The Stonington Food Waste Curbside Collection Pilot Program is ongoing!!  This voluntary program has been made possible through Sustainable Materials Management Grants from the CT DEEP and intends to remove the heavy wet food waste from yellow bags that are sent to the Lisbon                       incinerator. The contracted trash hauler, F.E. Crandall Disposal, will be picking up green bags (Town supplied) that residents have filled with separated food waste from the non-recyclable trash of their yellow bag. Stonington’s food waste is brought to Anaergia in Johnston, RI where it is turned into          renewable energy and further composted.

As part of the initial kick off in January 2023, All households received a 4 gallon compost pail and 50 green bags. If you did not receive a collection kit, you may pick one up at the Solid Waste Department in the lower level of the Town Hall or at the Transfer Station.

We are still providing FREE BAGS!  If you've been participating this past year, THANK YOU!!!  If you need more bags they are available on the main floor of the Town Hall (information table), downstairs in the Solid Waste Dept, or drive through the Transfer Station and ask the Gate Attendant for a roll.

During our 1st year residents diverted over 280 TONS of food waste from their yellow bags! Keep up the good work!

How To Dispose Of Your New Green Bag

We’re asking residents to voluntarily separate their food waste from their yellow bag so it can be further processed into renewable energy and compost  instead of heading to the incinerator.

Each week you can now place your green bag of food scraps out for pick up with your regularly scheduled trash disposal.

We are hearing from the hauler that some of the green bags are “very well hidden”. They are mixed in the recycling bins, buried in containers holding yellow bags and not easily spotted by the food waste pick up team. Let’s help our partner, F.E.Crandall Disposal make easy work of locating and disposing of your food scraps!  The green bags MUST be tied and it is suggested to leave the tied green bag in your new compost pail and place it next to your      curbside trash with the lid off. (see picture above) If you use a container for your yellow bags you may also put the green bag in the container, but please place it on top of the yellow bags or recycling bin.

Missed the pick up?  Filled the bag over the weekend and your trash service isn't until the end of the week? The Stonington Transfer Station has a dedicated 8YD Food Waste container for your convenience. Just bring in your bag and drop it in the can!

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN THIS GREAT PROGRAM!
